Turkey: A new law was introduced in Turkey on Tuesday (30 July). Under this law, millions of stray dogs will be removed from the streets. However, animal welfare activists have expressed concern over this move of the government and they are continuously protesting against the government.
Animal welfare activists say that this move by the government has created the danger of mass killing of dogs. According to ‘The Times’ report, Turkey’s Grand National Assembly passed this bill after an overnight session. It is reported that the Turkish government had put pressure on other parties regarding this law before the summer holidays.

The Turkish government has issued an order to municipalities. In this order, it was said that all the necessary work including vaccination should be ensured before picking up stray dogs from the streets, keeping them in shelter and giving them to someone else for adoption. Animal welfare activists are also worried that under this law, dogs which are in bad condition i.e. whose health is not good, will be killed.

People opposing the new law of the Turkish government said that this will force many dogs to die. According to the report of ‘The Times’, people opposing the law have called it ‘Massacre Law’. The government is also being pressured to repeal this law with immediate effect.
This fear haunts the critics
Many critics have surrounded the government on the issue of the new law. They feared that this law could be used to target political opponents in local elections. At the same time, it has also been said that mayors who do not follow this law will be punished. At the same time, protests have also started in many places in Turkey.
